I find it interesting how people use quotes by Abraham Lincoln. Some use quotes to support their beliefs in the role of government when it fits their goals. As an example, numerous presidents have quoted Lincoln. Many of those people will quote him in order to suggest we should support the government. But they always seem to forget that he also made it clear what should happen if the people aren’t satisfied with their government. Some of his quotes are:
“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.”
“No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent.”
“This country, with its institutions, belongs to the people who inhabit it. Whenever they shall grow weary of the existing government, they can exercise their constitutional right of amending it, or exercise their revolutionary right to overthrow it.”
He also famously wrote “…and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” and it’s worth asking ourselves regularly, “Are we faltering and losing our freedoms and destroying ourselves? What does your heart tell you? Do you feel free? Are you more afraid of criminals, terrorists, and being left to fend for yourself and your family? Or are you more afraid of the IRS?
